The Miller-Urey experiment

Many subsequent experiments have been performed, with different initial compositions and experimental conditions. One outstanding question always has been this: Do those conditions really represent the early Earth's atmosphere?

Similar experiments have been performed with an experimental atmosphere that has CO or CO2 as well as H2O and NH3. The results were similar: about 1% to 10% of the total carbon goes into organic molecules, including amino acids.
