Primordial elements and nucleosynthesis

Nucleosynthesis is the process of creating atoms from other atoms.

In stars, the process of fusion turns four hydrogen atoms into one helium atom. Fusion occurs in the centers of stars because of high pressures and temperatures.

Bennett et al.

The result: 4H --> He + energy

This is how and why stars shine (emit energy). Aside: Einstein's famous equation.
