Evolution

There are two main points of Darwin's theory of evolution, which he called the Theory of Natural Selection:

  • (1) Evolution -- or "descent with modification" -- exists and affects organisms through their offspring.

  • (2) Natural selection is the mechanism of evolution.

Natural selection is differential success in reproduction. Natural selection occurs through an interaction between the environment and the variability inherent among the individual organisms making up a population. The product of natural selection is the adaptation of populations of organisms to their environment.

These ideas were set out in Darwin's On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection (or The Origin of Species), the text of which can be found online here.
