Extremophiles

Some extremophiles can also thrive in highly acidic or alkaline (the opposite of acidic) environments.

This picture shows the highly acidic environment that is created in an old copper mine through reactions between water and mineral surfaces. Sound familiar?

The filaments are colonies of prokaryotes that thrive in acidic environments.
