Extremophiles

Deep sea vents -- where hot minerals and gases (including S, H, O, and C) are injected directly into the water -- are another place where thermophilic organisms thrive.

Some of these chemotrophic organisms are methanogenic (CO2 + 4H2 --> CH4 + 2H2O) or sulfur reducing (S + H2 --> H2S) as they produce energy.

Greek scholars: troph means "nourishment."
