The DNA world

After some time -- we don't know how long -- some RNA molecule manages to attach a copy of its genetic material to something like itself.

This redundant storage unit is super-secure and therefore has an evolutionary advantage over single RNA strands.

In other words, this RNA/DNA molecule is likely to stay around for longer, and become less mutated, than single RNA strands.
