SETI

The Harvard SETI group constructed a listening device called META, the Megachannel ExtraTerrestrial Assay. This device scanned (1985-1994) 1 million radio frequencies simultaneously to look for signals.

The upgrade instrument (1995-present) is called BETA. Do you know why?

SETI today also includes Project Phoenix, in which 1000 "promising" stars have been targeted for observations (listening).

There is also the SERENDIP project at UC-Berkeley (SERENDIP is the Search for Extraterrestrial Radio Emissions from Nearby Developed Intelligent Populations) which piggybacks on other observations made at Arecibo.

The SERENDIP data is reduced by people around the world in the SETI@home project.
