We now know that Titan appeared featureless because
of a thick atmospheric photochemical haze -- like
smog! -- that obscured the surface features.

Exploration of Titan and the Saturnian system was on
hold until 2004 or so when the
Cassini/Huygens
mission arrived at Saturn.
