Mars: The Viking biology experiments

It was because of all this evidence --- and perhaps some leftover motivation from Percival Lowell --- that NASA decided to equip its Viking landers (in the 1970s) with experiments to search for life on Mars.

We will talk about the details of these experiments and their complicated, confusing results --- everyone knows there's no life on Mars, right? Right? Hmm. --- in a couple of weeks when we talk about searches for life in the Universe.

For now, you might want to think about how you would design (from scratch) an experiment to be sent to Mars to search for life.

You get to start from scratch here. What would you do? How would you do it?
