Astrobiology: very difficult to experiment

How will we "prove" the existence of life elsewhere? Dig it up on Mars, see it swim around on Europa, or talk to it via SETI.

Otherwise, as has been pointed out, we are little better off than early biologists in the 17th and 18th centuries as far as the study of life in the Universe: we can only observe and theorize!
