What makes a world habitable?

Obviously, there are lots of answers to that question, but when people talk about habitable zones, they are really talking about the presence of liquid water.

Remember that the habitable zone is a function of the distance from the star as well as the spectral type -- that is, of the star's temperature and hence luminosity.
