Lecture 15 notes: Classification of stars

Below is part of the spectrum of the Sun.

Image of the Fraunhofer lines in the Sun's spectrum.

This tells us that we have a hot blackbody behind a cooler cloud, or atmosphere, of gas: we see the continuous spectrum overprinted by a series of darkened lines that represent absorption features.
