Lecture 14 notes: Brown dwarfs

Why do we care about brown dwarfs?

1: They formed the same way as stars -- we think. We can learn more about star formation by studying the entire range of products.

2: Brown dwarfs may be the most numerous of our (quasi-)stellar neighbors, so we want to learn about them and understand them.

In the Orion Nebula stars, brown dwarfs, and planets are forming right now.

One final brown dwarf note. Two new spectral types have been created to catagorize brown dwarfs, L and T. So the new spectral sequence now reads, OBAFGKMLT.
