Galaxies, cosmology, and the scale of the Universe

Another interesting and bizarre thing about our spiral galaxy -- and many others, too -- is the rotation curve of the galaxy (recall Kepler's third law).

This has been explained by postulating that dark matter exists in our galaxy (and all others too): matter that cannot be seen (hence: dark) but has mass and affects the gravitational interactions of our rotating galaxy.
