Kepler's first law:

All planets move on elliptical orbits with the Sun at one focus.

Remember way back from your high school geometry class that a circle is a kind of ellipse -- an ellipse with an eccentricity of zero.

So KI doesn't rule out circular orbits -- it just means that in general orbits are elliptical, not circular.
