Energy production in cells

The three phosphate groups are like a loaded spring, able to release energy when chemically activated.

Popping the third phosphate off releases energy.

This is because you release the energy held in the phosphate-phosphate bond.

The resulting molecule is adenosine diphosphate (ADP) (which looks even more like RNA).
