Galileo

Galileo was the first person to use a telescope for astronomy. (He did not invent the telescope.)

Galileo observed and identified mountains on the moon. He also observed the phases of the planet Venus:

which are best explained by the heliocentric, and not geocentric, view of the Solar System:
